Quick Movie Reflection of the Film “The Roses”
Hey everyone, doing another Movie Reflection!
This is my short and quick review of the movie The Roses from a Buddhist perspective.
In short, I found the movie entertaining.
I knew this was based on a book but did not realize there was another movie based on that book that was made a while back ago. I have not read the book or seen the other movie but I enjoyed this movie, and I feel if you are in a relationship you may find this movie very relatable.
The jokes on this movie are quick in and witty and as the movie progresses the comedy becomes more physical.
I see this movie as a lesson. What can go wrong if you let your ego get in the way and don’t allow yourself to compromise and have honest dialogues with your partner. I like how, in the beginning of the film you get to see the best versions of Ivy and Theo. They are so supportive of each other.
In life though things will change and obstacles will appear. That is when relationships are really tested. What I have found is that the relationships that are able to get through difficult moments become even better and stronger for it.
Unfortunately, this movie shows what happens when people make self-centered decisions based on ego. It reminds me a lot of the show Beef.
There is a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that goes, “Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.” A relationship is a partnership and when you stop seeing yourself as a team and see each other as enemies that’s when a relationship starts to become dysfunctional.
Overall, I found this movie to have a lot of funny moments, some of the characters did come off a bit cartoony and unrealistic but maybe that’s part of the charm of the film. Olivia Coleman and Benedict Cumberbatch though have characters that are very expressive and eccentric, their characters are very believable.
I also feel people in relationships will find it very relatable and can give people perspective on valuing your partner and even strengthening your relationship. Taking accountability for your actions is a big part of finding happiness in this earth and movies like this can be a reminder of that.
Thank you for watching my movie reflection from a Buddhist perspective.
